Link to story: Why Ad Blocking is devastating to the sites you love
We’re going to take the face paint off here at Urinal Gum for a moment and talk about something serious. Most websites are run by highly-motivated geniuses who want to comically communicate their brilliance to similarly intelligent folks out there (i.e. you, the reader). They do this in their free-time: the hour or so after their exhausting job at the cracker factory and before their mother insists on using the computer to meet up with her WoW guild. There is little reward for creating website content aside from a feeling of self-satisfied smugness. But, once the joy provided by this disappears, most website become part of the dotsam and netsam.
So, we here at UG have been trying to figure out a way to generate some sort of financial gain from urinalgum.com so that we might be able to actually pay our writers, therefore keeping them motivated to continue to produce award-runner-uppering content. We thought Google AdSense would be the way to go, but it doesn’t pay much unless readers click on the advertisements. And, when you are a site called “Urinal Gum,” you can imagine the irrelevant bullshit ads we get (see above left and right). Since we are like everyone else, we fall for the false consensus effect and assume every other site has this problem. How to fix it?
TIP WEBSITES YOU ENJOY!
This is simpler than tipping a barista or a stripper. You don’t actually have to spend any money. All you have to do is click on an ad. If you read an article that makes you laugh so hard your anus protrudes, click on an ad (then see a doctor). Most websites don’t tell you this because it is against the AdSense contract to solicit ad clicks. In fact, Google will probably ban us for this article. But, we feel so strongly about it that we are willing to take one for the team so that websites we love might benefit.
And, if clicking is just plain too much work for you, you can always do as the linked article above suggests: turn off ad block applications for the sites you regularly enjoy.
So, bringing it home with a concluding overall message, voting with your clicks will improve the quality of the sites you enjoy and will probably stick it to the Man (sites you don’t enjoy).
Jesus and we love you,
The UG staff
